Emma really doesn’t beat around the bush. She didn’t mince her words before telling that she doesn’t like Audrey Hepburn’s portrayal of Eliza (My fair lady).
Some reporters considered her words as a “lese majesty” against a holy cow that we do not have the right to criticize but for me Emma Thompson is more than entitled to speak her mind about Hepburn’s performance.
You can’t please everyone, no need to get angry and take it out on Emma.
Hepburn’s style of acting and her accent can be irritating and annoying but it doesn’t mean she wasn’t a good actress.
“I find Audrey Hepburn fantastically twee…Twee is whimsy without wit. It’s mimsy-mumsy sweetness without any kind of bite. And that’s not for me. She can’t sing and she can’t really act, I’m afraid. I’m sure she was a delightful woman – Emma said – and perhaps if I had known her I would have enjoyed her acting more, but I don’t and I didn’t, so that’s all there is to it, really… It’s high time that the extraordinary role of Eliza was reinterpreted, because it’s a very fantastic part for a woman”.
