In “Late Night,” Emma jauntily owns the scene playing Katherine Newbury, wearing tailored menswear-inspired pinstripe.
As night shows are dominated by men, it’s obvious that suits are the uniform of late-night hosts so not having a specific real life reference point, created a big challenge for the film’s costume designer Mitchell Travers.
Travers had to make up the costume arc for the iconic but late night female TV host and he was inspired by Ellen DeGeneres.
Travers has chosen the stage clothes among the wardrobes of current late night hosts, that are all male, and Emma/Katherine, looking as brilliant as ever, teaches us how to be a woman who wears suits with style.
The result is that Katherine Newbury wears 17 suits in the film.
This duo of movie costumes worn by Emma, were photographed on display at ArcLight Hollywood cinema on May 28, 2019 and at Downtown L.A.’s FIDM Museum & Galleries on February 4, 2020.
